"A Leader and Leadership Development Approach"
From years of experience, I have developed a Leadership Development Model or Framework which I believe contributes the most to building a sustainable environment for the development of managers and leaders. This model is applicable to any organization that wants to build a results oriented culture through its employees and that supports the building of leadership potential in all of its people. A brief description follows.
The Need for Leaders
Effective leadership development eludes organizations because they either wish to define leadership as management roles only or because they allow an external specialist to define leadership for them. In either case, leadership development is not particularly effective, integrated into the fabric of the organization, or measured as an on-going value-added contribution to the business.
Our premise for using the "From Leader to Leadership" approach is three fold:
- Individuals as leaders drive their own development and success. Individuals have an image of what a leader is and what makes a leader successful. It is this image that guides the individual's behavior in demonstrating his/her ability to contribute and demonstrate greater leadership potential.
- Organizations tend to see leaders as management roles; they do not truly understand what leadership represents for their organization. Most senior managers cannot articulate how they personally add value to the value proposition of their organization, nor how to develop or leverage the leader potential within their employees.
- Aligning the individual and organization's concept of leadership will significantly improve the identification and retention of high-potentials and improve the performance of a company at all levels.
